Reserved under the SC category, the Solapur Parliamentary Constituency is one among the 48 in the state of Maharashtra. The seat is held by Sharad Bansode of the BJP, who have defeated former union home minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde of the Congress in 2014.
In the 2009 elections, the results were reversed with Shinde defeating Banshee from the Solapur seat. Will a revolving door policy be in play here this time? Bansode is a strong candidate and defeating him would not be easy. However he will have to face two major factors. One is anti-incumbency and the second, the lack of a Modi wave. The Congress has won this seat 11 times and this means the party is no push over here. The BJP on the other has gained in strength and bagged this seat 4 times since 1996.
The total number of voters in the Solapur Lok Sabha Constituency is 1,594,138 of which 825,811 are male and 768,327 are female. The city of Solapur is the district headquarters of the Solapur District and is located just next to Karnataka border.
The 51 year old Bansode has 93 per cent attendance in Lok Sabha. He has taken part in 7 debates and asked 42 questions in Parliament.
