Hemant Soren's parents were Roopi and Shibu Soren, who was a former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and the founder-president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Hemant was born in Nemara, which was part of Bihar's Ramgarh district (now in Jharkhand) in 1975.
He has two siblings: his sister Durga Soren and his younger brother Basant Soren, who is also an MLA from Jharkhand's Dumka constituency. Among them, Hemant is the third child.
Hemant got involved in politics early and joined the JMM in 1994. He was first elected to the Jharkhand Assembly from the Barhait constituency in 2005. He won again in 2009 and 2014. He briefly served as a Rajya Sabha member from 2009 to 2010. In 2013, supported by the Congress and the RJD, he became Jharkhand's youngest Chief Minister. However, his tenure was short-lived as the BJP came to power in 2014 with Raghubar Das as the new Chief Minister. Hemant then became the Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly.
He resigned from the Rajya Sabha and later served as the Deputy Chief Minister in the BJP-led Arjun Munda government. The alliance dissolved after two years, leading to President's rule in the state.
After a five-year wait, Hemant's JMM won the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, and he became the Chief Minister once again.
As Chief Minister, Hemant Soren has focused on promoting tourism in Jharkhand, including developing the Deoghar airport and promoting religious tourism. His tenure has also faced challenges like Maoist insurgency and drought, which he has worked to address.
On a personal level, Hemant Soren is married to Kalpana Soren and has two sons.
