Puducherry is a union territory of India situated in down-south at the east coast. The union territory voted in a single phase on April 06, the voter turnout in the state was 81.64 per cent.
The Union Territories Act, 1963 limits the number of elected assembly seats to 30 and it also allows a provision to the central government to appoint maximum 3 nominated MLAs. Reservation to SC/ST remains enforced as per the constitution.
In 2016, Congress emerged as the single largest party by winning 15 constituencies and formed government with the support of DMK which has got 2 seats. Parties in opposition, All India N.R Congress had won 8 seats while the J Jayalalithaa led AIDMK had come victorious on 4 seats. BJP though got a minor surge of 1.08% in vote-share but failed to open an account in the assembly of Puducherry.
Just before the elections, there was drams in Puducherry after the Congress government was reduced to a minority in the assembly. The elections of 2021 witnessed the BJP contesting along the All India NR Congress. The Congress on the other hand contested the polls with the DMK.
