Ghulam Nabi Azad, born on 10 May 1948 in Soti Village, Gundu Taluk, Doda District, Jammu and Kashmir, has had a remarkable journey both in politics and social work. He completed his early education at High School, Kilhotran, Doda, before pursuing higher studies at G.G.M. Science College, Jammu, and Kashmir University, Srinagar, where he earned a Master’s degree in Zoology.
Azad's political career began with grassroots involvement, serving as Secretary of the Block Congress Committee and later as President of the District Congress Committee in Doda. His leadership expanded when he became President of the J&K Pradesh Youth Congress Committee from 1975 to 1977 and later, the General Secretary of the All India Youth Congress between 1977 and 1980. From 1980 to 1982, he served as the President of the All India Youth Congress.
In the national political arena, Azad was a Member of the Seventh Lok Sabha (1980-1984) and played a key role in various parliamentary committees. He was part of the Committee on Public Undertakings from 1981 to 1982 and a member of multiple consultative committees, including those for the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. His service as Union Deputy Minister began in September 1982 in the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Company Affairs. He later took on roles in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs.
Azad’s contributions extend beyond politics into social activities, particularly through the Jammu & Kashmir Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, where he organised hundreds of camps, helping to construct roads and wells across the state. He also led delegations abroad, such as the Sarvodaya delegation to Sri Lanka in 1973 and as a delegate to the Eleventh World Youth and Student Festival in Havana in 1978.
