Ghulam Nabi Azad is a former Indian National Congress party politician. He entered to the political fray as the secretary for the Block Congress Committee in Bhalessa in 1973. He trudged up the ranks and was subsequently appointed President of the youth congress. He won his first parliamentary elections in 1980 from Washim constituency in Maharashtra. He was inducted into the cabinet as a Union Minister in the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs in1982. Thereafter, he climbed up the political totem pole, bagged a few more prolific roles in the government as a Minister of state and consequently was sworn in the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2005. In 2008, he provoked a dire consequence by canceling the transfer of land to build a Hindu Shrine following a mass revolt by the Muslims. This ricocheted a Hindu Protest that claimed seven lives. The events culminated in Azad tendering in his resignation. He also served as the fifth term member of Rajya Sabha.
