Born on March 1, 1953, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, affectionately known as Thalapathy Stalin, was the third son of the esteemed Dravidian leader and five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi, and his wife Dhayalu Ammal.
Immersed in the ethos of the Dravidian movement from an early age, Stalin's upbringing was deeply influenced by his father's illustrious political career, which instilled in him the values of social justice, equality, and Tamil pride. Remarkably, his father christened him after the Russian President Joseph Stalin during a condolence meeting, held just days after the leader's demise coincided with Stalin's birth.
Entering the political arena in 1973, immediately after completing his bachelor's degree, Stalin embarked on a journey mirroring his father's footsteps. His fervent activism led to his incarceration under MISA in 1976 for bravely opposing the emergency.
Stalin's legislative journey commenced with his election as an MLA from the Thousand Lights constituency in 1989. Subsequently, he assumed the role of Chennai's Mayor in 1996. His ascent continued, culminating in his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister in 2009, serving alongside his father during his tenure as the state's chief minister.
Recognised for his unwavering commitment and leadership within the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Stalin assumed greater responsibilities as the organisation's Working President in 2017, seamlessly shouldering the responsibilities of the party as his father's health declined. This led to his elevation to the presidency of the DMK in 2018, a testament to his political acumen and widespread support within the party ranks. Throughout his journey, Stalin has remained dedicated to advancing the principles of the Dravidian movement and advocating for the welfare of the Tamil people.
As of 2025, M. K. Stalin continues to serve as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, maintaining his leadership role in the DMK and overseeing state governance.
