Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, a prominent Indian politician, the youngest son of Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) president and former Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, former Leader of the Opposition in Bihar Vidhan Parishad.
Tejashwi was born on November 9, 1989, in Gopalganj, Bihar. He currently holds the position of Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
Before entering politics, Tejashwi had a background in cricket. He played for Delhi in both the Under-17 and Under-19 cricket teams. He was also named as a standby player for the U-19 Indian National Cricket Team during their World Cup victory. Additionally, in 2008, he made his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Delhi Daredevils. Throughout the 2008 to 2012 seasons, he remained on the team's reserved bench.
In 2010, while still pursuing his cricket career, Tejashwi began his involvement with the RJD, revolutionising their campaigning methods and embracing digital outreach. His efforts proved fruitful, particularly during the 2015 Bihar Legislative Assembly Election, where he campaigned as part of the Mahagathbandhan alliance and secured victory in the Raghopur constituency by defeating Satish Kumar of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) by a margin of 22,733 votes. This success led to his appointment as the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, where he oversaw portfolios such as Public Works, Forestry, and Environment.
In 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated a case against Tejashwi and his family members. Subsequently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched an investigation into allegations of money laundering related to a corruption case dating back to 2004 involving the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. As a result of these developments, Nitish Kumar withdrew the Janata Dal (United) from the alliance and formed a new government with the BJP.
In 2018, Tejashwi was relieved from the investigation after providing evidence that he was only 14 years old at the time of the alleged incidents, thereby refuting any involvement in the accusations against him. Tejashwi managed to reaffirm his position within the RJD, eventually becoming its de facto leader.
During the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly Elections, Tejashwi took charge as the Chief Ministerial candidate for the RJD within the Mahagathbandhan alliance. Despite their collective effort, the alliance only managed to secure 110 seats, with RJD winning 75 of them. However, as the majority requirement for forming a government was 122 seats, the alliance fell short. Consequently, Tejashwi was elected as the Leader of Opposition in Bihar.
Currently, Tejashwi remains a significant figure in Bihar's political landscape, representing the Raghopur constituency and leading the opposition in the state assembly.
In November 2025, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav won the Raghopur Assembly seat with 1,18,597 votes, finishing ahead of BJP’s Satish Kumar Yadav by a margin of 14,532 votes, strengthening his leadership of the RJD and his role in Bihar politics.
