Suvendu Adhikari, the current Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, has traversed a significant political journey marked by strategic maneuvers and grassroots activism.
Born into a politically active family, Adhikari inherited a legacy from his father, Sisir Adhikari, a former Minister of State for Rural Development in the United Progressive Alliance.
Adhikari's political trajectory gained prominence during his tenure as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2009, where he served as Chairperson of the Contai Municipality. During this period, he demonstrated a keen interest in addressing socio-economic disparities, actively participating in initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation and organizing cultural programs for community upliftment.
In 2009, Adhikari transitioned to national politics, securing a seat in the 15th Lok Sabha. His tenure as a Member of Parliament was characterised by active involvement in parliamentary committees, notably the Standing Committee on Industry and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
However, it was Adhikari's pivotal role in the tumultuous political landscape of West Bengal that garnered widespread attention. His victory in the Nandigram constituency, a stronghold of political upheaval, during the state assembly elections marked a significant turning point. The Nandigram seat, once a symbol of opposition to the ruling Trinamool Congress, became a battleground where Adhikari successfully contested against the incumbent government, showcasing his political acumen and grassroots support.
In 2020, Adhikari made headlines with his bold decision to defect from the Trinamool Congress and join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a move that reverberated across the state's political spectrum. The BJP has nominated him to contest the election from the Kanthi Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general election.
Beyond politics, Adhikari's interests extend to sports, particularly cricket and football. He has been actively involved in football organisations at the district and sub-divisional levels, reflecting his multifaceted engagement beyond the realm of politics.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari filed a complaint through email to the Kolkata Police alleging that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee have threatened wrongful restraint of BJP leaders in the state by calling a gherao of their residences.
Suvendu Adhikari took a dig at the West Bengal government for arranging the Puja carnival on Red Road. As during Durga idol immersions eight people were washed by flood in Jalpaiguri’s Malbazar. To this, Mr. Adhikari said that if the same incident had happened in Calcutta, Ms. Banerjee would have cancelled the program. He also said that CM continued the carnival only because the incident happened in North Bengal.
