Ramesh Chennithala Biography

Ramesh Chennithala, born 25 May 1956 (age 69) in Alappuzha district, Kerala, entered public life at a young age amid an atmosphere of active student politics and social mobilisation. His early years were shaped by academic involvement and exposure to political discussions, which gradually drew him toward organised political activity rather than a professional career outside public life.

His political foundation was built through student organisations, beginning with the Kerala Students Union. He rose steadily through the ranks due to sustained grassroots work and organisational skills, eventually becoming the All India President of the National Students’ Union of India, one of the youngest leaders to hold that national student position.

Chennithala entered electoral politics in 1982 when he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Haripad constituency. He later transitioned to national politics, serving multiple terms as a Member of Parliament from Kottayam and Mavelikara constituencies, establishing himself as a prominent Congress representative from Kerala at the national level.

After returning to state politics, he held important cabinet positions in United Democratic Front governments, including Home Affairs, Vigilance, and Rural Development. These roles placed him at the centre of governance, law-and-order administration, and policy execution during different phases of Kerala’s political landscape.

He later served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and continued to take on significant organisational responsibilities within the Indian National Congress, including national-level party assignments.

In the 2026 Kerala Assembly election, he contested from Haripad as the Congress candidate and secured 68,184 votes. He defeated his nearest rival by 23,377 votes, delivering a decisive win and entering the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

On 18 May 2026, Ramesh Chennithala was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the new Kerala government, continuing his decades-long political career in the state.
