P. Viswanathan

P. Viswanathan is associated with the Madurai district, Tamil Nadu, and emerged into active political visibility through constituency-level public engagement and grassroots political activities. According to public election disclosures filed during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, he contested from the Melur Assembly constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate under the DMK-led alliance. His candidature became politically important because Melur was regarded as one of the closely contested constituencies in southern Tamil Nadu during the election period.

In early 2026, the Indian National Congress officially announced P. Viswanathan as its candidate from the Melur Assembly constituency for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election. Following the announcement, he actively participated in constituency-level roadshows, local interaction programmes, voter outreach campaigns, and public meetings across Melur. His campaign focused on direct voter engagement, rural outreach, local development issues, and booth-level coordination during the election period.

During the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election campaign, P. Viswanathan emerged as one of the visible Congress candidates in the Madurai region because of the electoral competitiveness of the Melur constituency. He conducted booth-level outreach programmes, public meetings, local campaign events, and constituency visits throughout the election period. Political observers noted that Melur remained one of the closely watched constituencies in southern Tamil Nadu because of the narrow competition between alliance candidates.

On 4 May 2026, P. Viswanathan won the Melur Assembly constituency as the Indian National Congress candidate by securing 60,080 votes. He won the constituency with a narrow margin of 2,724 votes, making it one of the closely contested seats in the Madurai region during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. His victory increased his political visibility within the Congress party and established him as one of the newly elected legislators from southern Tamil Nadu.

Following his electoral victory, P. Viswanathan was inducted into the Tamil Nadu Council of Ministers and currently serves as the Minister for Higher Education.
