Prof. M. V. Rajeev Gowda

Professor M. V. Rajeev Gowda's political journey is deeply rooted in the rich history of India's freedom struggle, drawing inspiration from the courageous tales of his family members. His uncle, M. V. Krishnappa, was a notable figure in the 1942 Quit India Movement, while his father, M. V. Venkatappa, contributed significantly as a leader in the Indian freedom movement, enduring imprisonment for his convictions.

Raised in an environment steeped in political consciousness, Prof. Gowda embarked on a journey to equip himself with the necessary knowledge and skills to effect positive change in society. His academic pursuits led him to St. Joseph's College, where he distinguished himself as Vice President of the Student Union and received recognition with the Bangalore University gold medal in political science. A co-founder of the Karnataka Quiz Association, his intellectual curiosity and leadership were evident from an early age.

With a commitment to understanding economics and public policy, Prof. Gowda pursued higher education abroad, earning a Master's degree in Economics from Fordham University and a PhD in Public Policy and Management from the prestigious Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. His academic journey continued with post-doctoral research at the University of California Berkeley's Law School, followed by a tenure as Associate Professor at the University of Oklahoma. He has been a visiting Professor at the W.H.U. Business School, Germany and Ryerson University, Canada. In India, he taught economics and policy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) and headed its Centre for Public Policy.

Prof. Gowda's dedication to public service and advocacy for electoral reforms and women's empowerment manifested in his political career. As a Member of Parliament, he fiercely advocated for the interests of Karnataka, holding the Central government accountable and championing initiatives to address societal challenges. For the past decade, he has overseen the AICC Research Department, providing crucial political and parliamentary assistance to senior figures and Members of Parliament associated with the Indian National Congress (INC).

Throughout his career, Prof. Gowda has been instrumental in various initiatives aimed at improving the lives of citizens, particularly in Karnataka. From promoting tele-counselling services to combat farmer suicides to advocating for metro feeder buses and suburban rail networks to alleviate traffic congestion, his efforts have left a lasting impact on the state's infrastructure and social fabric.

Beyond his political endeavours, Prof. Gowda's commitment to youth empowerment and community engagement is evident in his mentorship programs and grassroots initiatives. Whether through organising protests against moral policing or launching youth-led clean-up campaigns, he has consistently demonstrated his dedication to fostering a more inclusive and prosperous society.

As a founding trustee of Mentor Together and the driving force behind initiatives like the India-Women in Leadership Programme, Prof. Gowda continues to pave the way for future leaders and advocates for gender equality in politics and beyond. His unwavering dedication to public service and tireless advocacy for the betterment of society exemplify his enduring commitment to the ideals of democracy and social justice.

Apart from this, he has authored and edited numerous articles and books including 'Judgments, Decisions, and Public Policy' and 'India’s Risks.' He was even invited as a columnist and commentator for numerous newspapers, magazines and TV Channels.
