Mehbooba Mufti was born on May 22, 1969, in Akhran Nowpora, District Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. Her parents are Gulshan Nazir and Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, founder of Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party.
She made her debut in politics by winning the assembly elections in 1996. She served two consecutive terms as Member of Legislative Assembly of Kashmir before she was elected to the lower house of Parliament from Anantnag constituency in 2004. She was re-elected in 2014 as the Member of Parliament, representing the Anantnag seat, the position she retained until she tendered her resignation in 2016, to assume the position of Chief Minister of Kashmir. She took her oath and became the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2016 with the support of the BJP. She served in office for two years and tendered her resignation following the withdrawal of BJP's support and the untimely collapse of the coalition government in Kashmir.
She has a special interest in yoga, other forms of exercise, and listening to music.
On a personal note, Mehbooba Mufti is married to Javed Iqbal Shah, and they have two daughters. Iltija Iqbal and Irtiqa Iqbal. Iltija Iqbal is contesting the 2024 assembly elections from the Bijbehara seat.
