Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi

Aga​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Syed Muntazir Mehdi was a scion of the well-known Shia Aga family of Budgam, which was not only heavily involved in the religious arena but also in the political scene of central Kashmir. After that, he went further to study law and earned his LLB degree. Combining his knowledge of the law and public service, he also worked as an advocate.

Mehdi, in the initial stages of his career, deeply involved himself in the problems of the youth and work of the local people in Budgam. He made a name for himself by promoting and fighting for social justice, minority rights, as well as fair political representation. By way of his legal experience, he was able to successfully deal with the issues of governance, religious freedom, and policy changes in the region.

In August 2024, he became a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) formally, thus signaling his debut into big-time politics. In the same year, he ran for the Budgam assembly seat but was defeated by Omar Abdullah. Nevertheless, he became known as a political figure with a bright future.

By the time 2025 came around, he had managed to get the better of his opponent and hence won the Budgam by-election, Aga Syed Mehmood of NC, by 4,478 votes. He has since then been energetic in his participation in Jammu & Kashmir issues that are political, religious, and social in nature, and among other things, through his speeches, he has been advocating transparency, youth empowerment, and good ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌governance.
