Pinarayi Vijayan is an old member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala, who took over the office on May 25, 2016. He was born in 1944 in Pinarayi, Kerala, and commenced his political career with student movements, and then advanced through the party hierarchy. Vijayan was also in charge of various organizational functions of the CPI(M), among them, he served as the state secretary of the Kerala unit.
He held a number of major jobs, such as Minister of Electricity and Co-operation in the Kerala government (1996–2001), where he went on to implement extensive power sector reforms, before turning into Chief Minister. It is because of his leadership that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in 2016 and 2021 had prompt electoral wins in Kerala, a feat that is hardly seen in Indian politics.
Pinarayi Vijayan has been the Chief Minister of Kerala since May 2016. Earlier to this, he was twice a minister in the school education and electricity departments of the Kerala government. Pinarayi is a CPI(M) leader and is associated with the party's top decision-making bodies.
His first time as Chief Minister of Kerala was characterized by the implementation of people's welfare policies, the successful performance of decentralization, and the efficient undertaking of the disaster situation (i.e., the 2018 Kerala floods), along with the COVID‑19 crisis. Pinarayi Vijayan, who is also identified with his disciplined and tactical modus operandi, is still the most significant leader in the political arena of Kerala Propagation Loughp.
