Mizoram, was a district of Assam until it became a union territory in 1972. In 1972, the North-East Region Reorganization Act became Mizoram Union Territory. As a result of the historic agreement between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front in 1986, it was granted full state status on February 20, 1987. Located between Myanmar in the east and south and Bangladesh in the west, Mizoram is considered a strategically important state.
