Indian Elections 2026

The year 2026 will be an important year for India with several states going for elections. The election fever has gripped after the Election Commission of India on March 15 announced the poll schedule. The announcement confirmed that five assemblies would go to the polls in April: Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the union territory of Puducherry. These elections were crucial because the terms of the existing legislative assemblies were ending between May and June 2026.

According to the schedule, three states will vote in a single phase on 9 April 2026. Voters in Assam, Kerala and Puducherry go to polling stations that day to elect their new legislative assemblies. In Assam, all 126 seats of the state assembly will be contested as parties fight to secure the majority required to form the government.

The southern state of Kerala will have its election on 9 April 2026, with all 140 seats of the assembly up for contest. Meanwhile, the small union territory of Puducherry will vote on the same day, making 9 April the first major polling date of the 2026 election cycle. The next round of voting will occurr on 23 April 2026. On this day, voters in Tamil Nadu will cast their ballots in a single-phase election for the state assembly. The election drew national attention because of the state’s influential political landscape and its role in shaping southern
Indian politics.

The polling in the eastern state of West Bengal will be held two phases due to the size of the electorate and logistical considerations. The first phase will take place on 23 April 2026, and the second phase will be held on 29 April 2026. The results will be announced on 4 May 2026.
