Sarbananda Sonowal Biography

Sarbananda Sonowal was born on October 31, 1962, in Assam. He began his public life through student politics as a leader of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), where he gained prominence during the Assam Agitation. His early involvement in student movements shaped his political ideology and leadership approach.

He entered mainstream politics through the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dibrugarh in 2004. During this period, he gained national recognition for his legal challenge against the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act, which was later struck down by the Supreme Court.

He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and became a key leader in Assam. He served as Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports before being appointed the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Assam. In 2016, he led the party to victory and became the Chief Minister of Assam, marking a major political shift in the state.

He served as Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021, focusing on governance, infrastructure development, and social welfare. After the 2021 Assembly elections, he transitioned to national politics and was appointed as Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, as well as AYUSH in the Government of India.
