Sarbananda Sonowal Biography

Sarbananda Sonowal has been the 14th chief minister of Assam. He is popularly known as a firebrand and dynamic youth politician, also regarded as a Jatiya Nayak of Assam, a title given by the AASU, the oldest student body of the state.

Sarbananda Sonowal was born to Jibeswar Sonowal and Dineswari Sonowal at Molokgaon in the Dibrugarh district on 31st October 1962.

He was elected to the lower house of the Indian parliament, Lok Sabha from the Lakhimpur constituency in Assam but he resigned from the post in 2016. He contested and won the 18th general elections from Dibrugarh on the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) ticket. Following this victory, he was inducted into the Modi 3.0 cabinet and was given the charge of Ministery of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.

Before joining the parliament, he was representing the Majuli constituency in Assam's state legislative assembly.

His special interest lies in interacting with the learned people to know important things in life and he also prefers to expand his friend circle. Apart from this, he enjoys games like cricket, football and badminton.

  • 2024 : He was elected to the 18th Lok Sabha from the Dibrugarh seat under the banner of the BJP. Subsequently, he was made a Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
  • 2021 : He won the Assam Legislative Election from the Majuli constituency and also helped the BJP to attain a majority mark under his leadership. Sarbanand Sonowal was called into Delhi and appointed as the Cabinet Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterway and additionally given the charge of Ayush Ministry as well.
  • 2016 : He resigned from Loksabha. He was elected from the Majuli Constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly. On May 24, 2016, Sarbanand Sonowal was sworn in as the chief minister of Assam as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance won a solid majority in the state.

He got the contentious Illegal Migration (Determination by Tribunal) Act, 1983 struck down by the Supreme Court of India in 2005. India's longest Dhola-Sadia bridge across rivers Brahmaputra and Lohit triggered new economic revolution in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and entire Northeast.
