John Barla Biography

John Barla was born on August 8, 1975, in Lakhipara, Alipurduar district of West Bengal. He began working in tea gardens at the age of 14, an experience that shaped his later political activism focused on labour rights and the welfare of tea garden workers.

He rose to prominence by advocating for tea garden workers and tribal communities in North Bengal. His grassroots activism translated into electoral success in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where he defeated Dasrath Tirkey of the All India Trinamool Congress by a margin of over 2 lakh votes from Alipurduars constituency.

On July 8, 2021, he was appointed Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs in the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His tenure focused on minority welfare and outreach initiatives.

In 2022, he faced controversy after being arrested for allegedly violating the election code of conduct. He continued in office until June 2024, when he was replaced during changes in the Union Council of Ministers.

After being denied a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he distanced himself from the Bharatiya Janata Party. On May 15, 2025, he joined the All India Trinamool Congress in the presence of senior party leaders, marking a significant political shift in West Bengal.

As of 2026, he remains active in West Bengal politics, particularly in the tea garden and tribal belt regions.
