Retired Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi is the first judge from northeast India to hold the post. He hails from Assam and is the son of former Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi and Priya Gogoi. He married Rupanjali Gogoi and was blessed with two children with her.
In 2014, he faced criticism for not recusing himself from the Assam NRC case despite being from Assam and potentially affected by its outcome.
On January 12th, 2018, he joined three other senior judges in publicly criticising then CJI Dipak Misra for irregularities in case assignments, fearing it could undermine public confidence in the judiciary.
Despite this, CJI Misra recommended Gogoi's nomination as his successor, which was followed in September 2018.
In April 2019, allegations of sexual harassment against CJI Gogoi surfaced, but an in-house inquiry committee found no substance in the claims.
He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2020 and now he is a Member of the Committee on Communications and Information Technology.
