Debabrata Saikia

Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury is an Indian politician, social worker, and women’s rights activist from West Bengal affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Known by the popular moniker “Nirbhaya Didi,” she has worked extensively on legal literacy, women’s empowerment, and violence-against-women initiatives. She serves as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from English Bazar constituency.

Debabrata Saikia was born on 8 February 1969 in Assam. He completed his higher education in law and became associated with public affairs at a relatively young age. Coming from a political background, his father, Hiteswar Saikia, served as Chief Minister of Assam, and he developed early exposure to governance and public administration.

Saikia entered electoral politics in the late 1990s and was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Nazira constituency. His initial tenure established him as a young legislator within the Indian National Congress, where he engaged in constituency representation and legislative work.

Over successive terms, he held ministerial responsibilities in the Assam government, including portfolios related to Power, Transport, and Excise during the Congress-led administration. His executive experience expanded his role from legislator to cabinet-level responsibilities within the state government.

Following the 2016 Assam Assembly elections, when the Congress moved to the opposition benches, Saikia was appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. In this role, he has participated in debates on governance, policy decisions, and state administration.
