Shivashanmugam Pillai, who served as the first Scheduled Caste mayor of Madras also served as the first speaker of the Madras Legislative assembly after India’s independence between May 6 1952 and August 16 1955. Since then the TN assembly has had 17 Speakers. P Dhanpal who was appointed Speaker on October 10 2012 took oath once again on May 16 2016.
