Maheshwar Hazari was born on 9 October 1962. His father, Late Ramsewak Hazari, was a prominent socialist politician, an eight-time MLA in the Bihar Assembly, and also served as an MP in the 6th Lok Sabha. Maheshwar Hazari is married to Sandhya Hazari, who is a voluntarily retired teacher and housewife. Together, they have three sons and one daughter. One of his sons, Sunny Hazari, has also ventured into politics, campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections.
Hazari's political career is marked by various significant positions. He is a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Kalyanpur (Samastipur) constituency, winning elections in 2005, 2015, and 2020. He also served as a Member of the Indian Parliament during the 15th Lok Sabha, representing the Samastipur (Lok Sabha constituency), where he notably defeated Ram Vilas Paswan's brother, Ram Chandra Paswan, in 2009. He contested the 15th and 16th Lok Sabha elections.
Throughout his career, Maheshwar Hazari has held several key ministerial portfolios in the Bihar government, including Minister of the Industry Department and the Planning and Development Department from 2015 to 2020. He also had charges of the Urban Development and Housing Department and the PWD (Building Construction Department), where he was involved in major projects like the Patna Metro and the New Patna Map Plan. From March 2021 to February 2024, he served as the Deputy Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, a role he resigned from on 21 February 2024, citing a voluntary decision after consultations with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He currently serves as the Information and Relations Affairs minister.
Maheshwar Hazari is a graduate, having completed his matriculation in 1979 from a Senior Secondary School, and subsequently obtained degrees from B.R.B. College, Samastipur, in 1981, and B.R.V. College, Samastipur, in 1983, earning a B.A. His primary professions include agriculturist, businessperson, and social service. He has no criminal cases registered against him.
In November 2025, Maheshwar Hazari of JD(U) won the Kalyanpur (SC) seat by polling 118,162 votes and defeating CPI(ML) Liberation’s Ranjeet Kumar Ram by 38,586 votes, consolidating his influence in Samastipur district.
