Yadav was formerly a member of Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) party and contested the 2004 elections under the banner. However, he lost the elections and couldn't secure a ticket from Siwan, ergo decided to run and win the 2009 election as an independent candidate.

He was re-elected for a second term from Siwan as a BJP candidate, where he once again thwarted Hena Shahab bid to the seat.
2009
He was elected to 15th Lok Sabha from Siwan Constituency in Bihar as an Independent candidate. He defeated Hena Shahab of Rjd's bid to the seat by a margin of 63,000 votes.
2004
He contested and lost the 14th Lok Sabha elections to Mohammad Shahabuddin of RJD from Siwan.
