Born on January 1, 1971, in Bihar, Ratnesh Sada hailed from a landless Musahar (Scheduled Caste) family in Balia Simar village, located in the Mahishi police station area of Saharsa district. His father, Laxmi Sada, worked as a daily wage labourer, and the family often faced severe hardships, including moments of hunger where they had to subsist on Khesari greens. Despite these challenges, Ratnesh Sada pursued education and completed his graduation in 1992. He further holds an Acharya degree in Sanskrit. In his youth, he worked as a rickshaw-puller, a daily wage earner, and even as a village quack to support his family.
Sada's political career commenced in 1987. He first contested an election in 2005 on a Samajwadi Party ticket but was unsuccessful. His dedication to public service and connection with the people, particularly the Mahadalit community, caught the attention of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He played a significant role in organizing a rally for the Musahar community ahead of the 2010 Assembly polls. This led to him receiving a JD(U) ticket from the Sonbarsha (SC) constituency. He won this election in 2010, marking his entry into the Bihar Legislative Assembly. He was re-elected for consecutive terms in 2015 and 2020, demonstrating his strong hold over the constituency.
Within the Janata Dal (United) party, Ratnesh Sada has held various key positions, including being the President of the JD(U)'s Mahadalit Cell and serving as party Vice President. In June 2023, he was inducted into the Nitish Kumar cabinet as the Minister of Prohibition, Excise, and Registration, replacing Santosh Kumar Suman. As a minister, Sada has advocated for the strict enforcement of liquor prohibition laws, including proposing the application of the Criminal Control Act on the liquor mafia in Bihar.
He is married to Saraswati Devi and has three sons and two daughters.
In November 2025, Ratnesh Sada won the Sonbarsha (SC) assembly seat, polling 97,833 votes and finishing ahead of INC candidate Sarita Devi by 13,454 votes, reinforcing his long-standing presence in state politics.
