He is professionally an agriculturist and started his political journey with the Bihar Legislative Council in 1988. He has been Minister of Cabinet for Revenue, Land Reforms, Law and Information in the state at different times. He is the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and is a 2 times Rajya Sabha MP.

Ram Nath Thakur, born on March 3, 1950, in Karpoori Gram, District Samastipur, Bihar, is a prominent figure in Indian politics and social activism.

Thakur's journey in public service began with his involvement in the movements led by eminent leaders such as Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan, and his father, Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur. His commitment to empowering the underprivileged and advocating for a more equitable society led him to face imprisonment numerous times during non-violent protests.

In May 1988, he embarked on his political career by becoming a member of the Bihar Legislative Council, a role he served until February 2000. Thakur's dedication to serving his constituents led to his subsequent tenure as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from March 2000 to November 2010. During his tenure, he held the position of Cabinet Minister from November 2005 to November 2010. In April 2014 and April 2020, Thakur was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
