Manoranjan Singh, widely known by his alias Dhumal Singh, has had a long and impactful career marked by both controversy and political success. Initially, he was associated with an underworld gang, dealing in scrap iron and reportedly involved in extortion. He was on the 'most wanted' list in the 1970s and 1980s, with over 100 cases registered against him across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Mumbai, and Jharkhand.
His criminal record included serious charges such as murder, attempted murder, and allegations of land grabbing. Dhumal Singh initiated his political journey in 2000, winning as an independent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Baniapur constituency in Saran. He continued his streak of electoral victories, first on a Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) ticket in February 2005, and then on a Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) ticket in November 2005, both from Baniapur. Subsequently, he shifted his constituency to Ekma, where he successfully contested and won the 2010 Assembly elections under the JD(U) banner, defeating RJD's Kameshwar Kumar Singh by a margin of 29,201 votes.
In 2014, Dhoomal Singh made an attempt at national politics, contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Maharajganj on a JD(U) ticket, but he did not win. However, he successfully returned to the Bihar Assembly in 2015, once again winning from the Ekma constituency as a JD(U) candidate, this time defeating the BJP's Kameshwar Kumar Singh. He has consistently been identified as a JD(U) MLA from Ekma in subsequent years, including a mention as a declared candidate for the upcoming 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, suggesting his ongoing political relevance and influence. Dhumal Singh is considered a close associate of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
In November 2025, Dhoomal Singh contested the Ekma Assembly seat on a JD(U) ticket and was elected as the MLA, securing 84,077 votes and defeating RJD’s Srikant Yadav by a margin of 22,708 votes.
