Currently, she holds the position of Chairperson for the Bihar State Commission for Women, a role she assumed in 2023.

She contested the Bihar Assembly Election in November 2025 from the Samastipur constituency and secured a win, defeating Akhtarul Islam Shahin of the RJD by 13,875 votes.

Ashwamedh Devi's political journey began in Bihar, where she was born on 18 September 1967, in Meyari, Samastipur district. She is a dedicated leader of the Janata Dal (United) and has been associated with the party since the era of the Samata Party.

Her legislative career started with her election as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Kalyanpur constituency in Samastipur, serving two terms from 2000 to 2009. During this period, she also chaired the Committee on Petitions in the Bihar Vidhan Sabha from 2008 to 2009.

In 2009, Ashwamedh Devi achieved national-level representation by being elected as a Member of the 15th Lok Sabha from the Ujiarpur constituency, becoming the first MP from that constituency. She was also a member of the Committee on Agriculture and the Committee on Empowerment of Women during her tenure in the Lok Sabha.

While she contested subsequent elections, including the 2014 Lok Sabha and the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, she did not win. However, in 2023, recognising her extensive experience and dedication, the Government of Bihar appointed her as the Chairperson of the Bihar State Commission for Women.

Ashwamedh Devi is also a candidate in the upcoming 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections from Samastipur.

In November 2025, Ashwamedh Devi won the Samastipur seat, polling 95,728 votes and finishing ahead of RJD’s Akhtarul Islam Shahin by a margin of 13,875 votes, marking a strong comeback for the veteran JD(U) leader.
