Anant Singh Biography

Anant Singh was born on 5 January 1967, in the village of Nadwan in Barh CD block, Bihar, to Chandradeep Singh and Bacchi Devi. He is the youngest of four brothers. His elder brother, Dilip Singh, was also a notable politician, having served as an MLA and Minister from Mokama in the 1990s. Anant Singh's early life and rise to prominence were marked by his emergence as a strongman figure, particularly within the Bhumihar community, where he was seen as a protector during caste conflicts. He began his criminal career as an enforcer for his brother.

Anant Singh initiated his active political career by successfully contesting and winning the Mokama assembly seat in 2005 on a Janata Dal (United) ticket. He continued his winning streak, securing re-election from Mokama in 2010, again as a JD(U) candidate. In 2015, following a disagreement with then-Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the JD(U)'s alliance with the RJD, he left the party and successfully contested the election as an independent candidate. By the 2020 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, Anant Singh had joined the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and won the Mokama seat for the fourth consecutive time, notably doing so while being in jail.

His political career has been intertwined with numerous legal battles. According to his 2020 election affidavit, he faced 38 criminal charges, including 7 for murder, 11 for attempt to murder, and 4 for kidnapping. Patna High Court documents indicate as many as 52 cases against him. He was convicted in two cases, one in 2015 and another in 2019, primarily under the Arms Act. In 2022, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for these Arms Act cases, which led to his disqualification as an MLA. However, the Patna High Court acquitted him in these Arms Act cases on 14 August 2024. In May 2024, he was released on a 15-day parole for Lok Sabha election campaigning. Anant Singh is currently seeking re-election, having filed his nomination as a Janata Dal (United) candidate for the Mokama Assembly seat in October 2025.

He is married to Neelam Devi, who herself won the Mokama by-election in 2022 after his disqualification. Anant Singh is known for his distinctive lifestyle and eccentricities, earning him the moniker 'Chhote Sarkar'. He is reported to have a fondness for horses, owning luxury cars, and at one point, keeping a python as a pet and an elephant trained to shake hands.
