The first Prime Minister Of India, Jawaharlal Nehru was instrumental in prying the country out of the clutches of British rule. Inspired by a meeting with Gandhi, he actively took a plunge in the freedom struggle and consequently jailed for his rebellion. Undeterred by the arrests and undaunted by the dire consequence, he rallied on and inspired the nation to march along with him, until the struggles bore fruit and the country was emancipated from British rule in 1947. He was elected Prime Minister of India in 1947 the position he served until his death in 1964.
