Somen Mitra is an Indian Politician who served as the MLA of Sealdah constituency for seven consecutive terms from 1972-2009 as an INC member. In 2009, Mitra severed his longtime ties with INC and formed a new party, named Pragatisheel Indira Congress. He subsequently merged with AITC and contested and won the 2009 parliamentary elections from diamond Harbour constituency. In 2014 he resigned from his post to reconstruct his alliance with the Congress.
