Ashish Sood Biography

Ashish Sood, born on 2nd September 1966, is an Indian politician and a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi. He is well-known among the core members of the BJP who have risen through the ranks of its ideological channels, specifically the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), and the BJP itself.

Ashish grew up in Delhi and attended the University of Delhi, where he studied for a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours at ARSD College. As a young student, he was greatly influenced by the nationalist ideas of the ABVP. Although the BJP was not seen as a major political force at the time, his passion for nationalism led him to join the ABVP. He quickly rose through the ranks, first becoming the secretary of his college, then the joint secretary of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), and finally the president of DUSU in 1988-89.

From 1989 to 1993, Ashish dedicated himself as a full-time worker for the ABVP. As a student leader, he led several movements against corruption in high offices, including the notable ‘Bofors Scam’ of the 1980s. In 2002, he took on the role of Vice President in the Delhi unit of the BJYM and was promoted to General Secretary the following year. By 2005, he served as the national Vice President of the BJYM.

In 2008, Ashish was appointed as the secretary of the Delhi State BJP and worked closely with the then-president, O. P. Kohli, who later became the Governor of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. He is among the few young leaders to have been given significant responsibilities by six successive presidents of the Delhi BJP. His roles included General Secretary under Vijendra Gupta, Vice President with Vijay Goel and Dr. Harsh Vardhan, and General Secretary with Satish Upadhyay. Currently, he oversees the Publicity Division under the present Delhi BJP president, Manoj Tiwari.

In 2012, Ashish Sood was elected as a councillor for the South Municipal Corporation of Delhi from the Janakpuri ward in West Delhi. Due to his visionary leadership, he was appointed chairperson of the Remunerative Project (RP) Cell twice and later chairperson of the Education Committee. He also served as Leader of the House and was a member of the standing committee. As chairperson of the RP Cell, he established an advertising and parking policy that allowed only registered vendors to participate in the tender process. Under his leadership of the Education Committee, he opened primary schools to the corporate sector to address financial challenges in improving services. He successfully encouraged corporate sectors to adopt schools and invest their CSR funds in South MCD schools.

Ashish launched the NEEV project, which aimed to conduct surveys in nearby areas and provide immediate admission to the poorest children in the city. This initiative helped thousands of children from slums, construction sites, and streets to enter the formal education system. He also initiated a ‘book recycling’ project, allowing schools to take back books from students at the end of the year and redistribute them after necessary maintenance.

In his constituency, Ashish Sood is known for his integrity, vision, dedication, compassion, and excellent organisational skills. He is married to Anupam Sood, and together they have a son, Shivansh, and two daughters, Saumya and Aastha.
