Tapas Paul was a member of All India Trinamool Congress Party, began his career as an Indian film artist and gained recognition for his work in Bengali film Industry. Prior to his sojourn into Indian politics in 2001, he galvanized his position in Bengali films, winning scores of awards for his performance in copious movies. In a span of three decades, he had said to have starred in over 400 movies. He had also served as an MLA of Alipore constituency for two terms before he was elected as the MP of Krishnanagar in West Bengal in 2009. He was re-elected in 2014 in the 16th Lok Sabha elections, however, his political career was marred by scandal when he was arrested for his involvement in a ponzi scam in Rose Valley group for which he served a thirteen-month sentence. Despite the scandal, he still retained his position as a Lok Sabha elect.
