Sumitra Balmik was born to Dukhkhi Lal and Prem Bai in Jabalpur on 01st July 1955. She married Gurucharan in 1972 and was blessed with three children with her.
She was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2022 and represents Madhya Pradesh as a Bhartiya Janta Party candidate. She is also the vice-president of the BJP in Madhya Pradesh.
In addition to this, she holds the position of vice president in the All India Valmiki Mahasabha.
She serves as a member of the Committee on Petitions, the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and the Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.
She champions women's empowerment by providing skill development and training opportunities and fostering employment to enable financial independence. Additionally, she actively supports the advancement of Dalits, backward classes, and 'safai karamcharis.' Furthermore, she is dedicated to environmental protection, advocating for water conservation and promoting rainwater harvesting initiatives.
As an active member of the local self-government, she has been instrumental in implementing welfare schemes at the grassroots level. Her hands-on approach and deep-rooted empathy have touched countless lives, especially those belonging to marginalised groups. Whether it is advocating for better living conditions or amplifying the voices of the underserved, she remains steadfast in her mission to create a more equitable society.
Her passion for sports runs deep, particularly in traditional games like cricket, hockey, kho-kho, and kabaddi.
