Mangal Pandey began his journey in public life by joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, in 1987. He further deepened his association with the RSS by regularly attending its 'sakhas' from 1988. In 1989, he formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a primary member from Maharajgunj. His political career saw him take on various responsibilities within the Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), including being inducted into the state working committee in 1994, becoming the in-charge of the Saran zone in 1995, and serving as the State Secretary in 1997. He rose to become the State President of BJYM in 2000.
Pandey continued his upward trajectory within the BJP, serving as a State General Secretary for multiple terms starting in 2005. His steady rise culminated in his appointment as the State President of the BJP, Bihar, from 2013 to 2017. During his tenure as State President, he played a crucial role in the party's election campaigns, including the 2014 General Election, where the NDA secured 31 out of 40 seats in Bihar.
He became a Member of the Bihar Legislative Council on 7 May 2012, a position he continues to hold. He has served as the Minister of Health & Family Welfare in the Government of Bihar during two tenures, first from 29 July 2017 to 9 August 2022, and again assuming office on 28 January 2024. Beyond Bihar, he was also appointed as the BJP in-charge for Himachal Pradesh for the 2017 Vidhan Sabha election.
Mangal Pandey, in November 2025, was the winner of the Siwan seat in Bihar. He got 92,379 votes and was able to defeat RJD’s Awadh Bihari Chaudhary by a margin of 9,370 votes. As a result, he consolidated his position as a senior BJP leader and state health minister.
Following the 2025 mandate, he took the oath as part of the reconstituted Bihar cabinet, assuming his new ministerial responsibilities.
