H. Raja initially came to public notice through his work as an activist with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He joined the BJP in 1989. Through a period of time, he moved like a ladder in the party, he fulfilled the roles of a district convener, state secretary and finally, in 2014, a national secretary. Part of his early career was dedicated to working directly with people in his native area, and he was very much involved in social and political mobilisation.
He has been the MLA from Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, from the year 2001 to 2006. He has been a candidate in assembly and Lok Sabha elections numerous times, albeit winning only a few of them. Politically, he has been journeying bolder in conducting interviews and deeper into the ideological issues.
After a few controversial remarks in 2018, he has been shadowed by controversies in the past years. H. Raja was found guilty by a special tribunal in the month of December 2024 in defamation cases. The cases involve his condescending comments against a rival party MP and remarks about tearing down statues. The court ordered that he be jailed for six months (along with a fine); however, an appeal has been filed challenging the sentence. He is still engaged in party activities and public talks even after the conviction and claims that he will not be in the election race but rather engage in campaigning and organisational work.
In April 2023, he declared that he is not going to run in any election, but he will far from inactive as he will be a member of the party executive committee. Until 2025, he will hold the position of a high-ranking party leader and cooperate in public and political discourse in Tamil Nadu.
