Bhubaneswar Kalita Biography

Bhubaneswar Kalita was born to Krishna Kanta Kalita and Giribala Kalita in Rangia on 1st April 1951. He married an IAS officer, Rwitticka Kalita in 1986 and was blessed with two sons with her.

He was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the fifth time from Assam as a Bharatiya Janata Party member. He even represented the Rajya Sabha in the South Asia Speakers Meet in Maldives and Sri Lanka in 2014 and 2018 respectively.

As the Chairperson of the Committee on Health and Family Welfare, he is dedicated to ensuring the well-being of the citizens by formulating effective health policies. Additionally, serving as a Member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Home Affairs.

As a Permanent Special Invitee to both the Consultative Committees for the Ministries of Law and Justice, and Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, he brings valuable insights and perspectives to important legal and consumer-related matters.

In rural areas, his efforts have been focused on organised development activities, with a particular emphasis on empowering youth and women through training and skill-building initiatives aimed at fostering income generation.

Additionally, he put efforts to integrate tribal culture into the broader societal framework through cultural events and activities, promoting social awareness and cohesion within rural communities.

Apart from handling ministries and doing social work, he contributes sports-related articles and columns in newspapers and magazines. As the Chairperson of the North East Commission of the Indian Olympic Association, and has served as Vice-President of various esteemed organisations including the Indian Olympic Association and the Assam Olympic Association, as well as the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India, he has dedicated himself to fostering the development of sports in rural areas.

Additionally, he had the honour of representing India as the Chef-De-Mission of the Indian Contingent during the Commonwealth Games 2010 in Delhi. Beyond sports, he finds joy in travelling and reading.
