Dr Satyapal Singh is a former top cop who upon his retirement from Indian Police Service joined the BJP and contested 2014 LS polls from Baghpat constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Dr Singh has formerly served as a Police Commissioner of Mumbai after starting his career as an IPS officer. He defeated Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh by a whopping margin of 2,09,866 votes in his maiden election. He has held the portfolio of MoS Human Resource Development; and Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. Currently, he's holding the portfolio of MoS HRD [Higher Education].

  • On 31 January 2014, he tendered his resignation and applied for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) to join the BJP.

  • He was appointed as Commissioner of Mumbai Police on August 23, 2012.
2000s
  • He also served as the Commissioner of Nagpur where he started an outreach programme called Mission Mrityunjay to fight anti-social activities and terrorism with the help of students to fight terrorism. He started similar initiative in Pune during his stint as Commissioner of the City. It was during his tenure as Pune CP when the world was rocked by the 2010 Pune bombings at German Bakery in which 17 people were killed.

  • As Crime Chief of Mumbai, he successfully broke the backbone of the organised crime syndicates that terrorised Mumbai, including the Chhota Shakeel, Chhota Rajan and Arun Gawli gangs.

  • Singh joined as IPS officer in 1980 batch and his first posting was in Nasik as the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). He later went on to become the SP of Buldhana and eventually being named Maharashtra's Additional Director General of Police before serving as Mumbai City Police Commissioner. He is widely credited for curbing the menace of organised crime syndicates in Mumbai during his tenure as the Joint CP (Crime).

  • Satyapal Singh was born in Baghpat district of UP. He is a post-graduate in Chemistry from Digambar Jain College, Baraut. He's also an M Phil in Chemistry from Delhi University.
