Prasun Banerjee Biography

Prasun Banerjee, a retired international footballer from Kolkata, has received the Arjuna Award (1979) as recognition for his contributions to Indian football. Along with that, he also led the Indian national football team in international tournaments and is the younger sibling of the famous footballer Pradip Kumar Banerjee.

Prasun Banerjee’s entry into politics was in the year 2013, when he won the Howrah Sadar Lok Sabha by-election on the Trinamool Congress ticket, plunging straight into the Indian Parliament as the first professional footballer ever. He outpolled Left Front's Sridip Bhattacharya by over 27000 votes.

The 2014 Lok Sabha elections saw him re-elected, and he secured a third consecutive term in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by winning a seat in the 17th Lok Sabha. His stint in the parliament was characterised by steady electoral support and active involvement with the issues concerning his constituents.

From the year 2025 onwards, Prasun Banerjee will be celebrated for his contributions both in Indian sports and public life.

Banerjee was included in the All Time Best-XI team of Mohun Bagan Club as a Central Defensive Midfielder. He was only the second Indian to play for Asian All-star XI. He also played two matches against Brazil for Asian All-star XI and played against Zico, Eder, Falcao, Socretes and others. He was included in the Limca book of record for representing India in 100 football matches.

Cosmos (Brazil).
