With a long tenure in the realm of politics, Saugata Roy from All Indian Trinamool Congress is also an academician who holds a degree in Law and Physics. A retired professor of Physics at Aushotosh College, he touts a long, illustrious political career. He was elected from Barrackpore constituency in the 6th Lok Sabha elections in 1977. Following his win, he had a very brief stint as the Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Chemicals in 1979. He also served as the Union Minister of State, Urban Development in 2009 after his win in the 15th Loksabha elections from Dum Dum, West Bengal. Since 2014, he is serving his third term in Loksabha. He was elected as the MLA of West Bengal for five terms (1987-2009).
