Biplab Mitra is a senior Indian politician and advocate from South Dinajpur district, West Bengal, with a long history in regional politics. He holds a graduate professional degree and is trained in law, practising as an Advocate prior to and alongside his political career. In addition to his professional background, Mitra has been active in public service and community leadership within Harirampur and the broader district area.
In the 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Mitra contested as a candidate of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) from the Harirampur constituency, defeating the CPI(M) candidate to secure his first term as an MLA. After a defeat in 2016, he returned to the legislative assembly with a significant victory in the 2021 Assembly polls, reaffirming his electoral strength in the region.
During his political career, Mitra briefly left the Trinamool Congress in June 2019 to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reflecting a period of shifting allegiances amid broader state political dynamics. However, he rejoined the AITC in 2020, returning to his original party ahead of subsequent state and national elections, reinforcing his commitment to his political base.
In May 2021, following his re-election as MLA, Mitra was appointed Minister of Consumer Affairs in the Government of West Bengal, where he oversees consumer protection and related administrative functions.
As of 2026, he continues his legislative role and ministerial duties while also engaging in statewide and constituency-level political initiatives.
