Sukhendu Sekhar Ray was born on April 5, 1949, to Shibendu Sekhar Ray and Hironmoyee Devi in English Bazar, West Bengal. His journey into politics commenced in 1968, marked by various roles and responsibilities. Before venturing into politics, he served as a Law Officer in a Government of India Enterprise. Notably, he held the position of Vice-President at the Calcutta High Court Bar Association from 2009 to 2011.

In August 2011, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray was elected to the Rajya Sabha, marking the onset of his parliamentary career. Over the years, he has actively participated in legislative activities and committees. Noteworthy positions include serving as Chief Whip for the All India Trinamool Congress in the Rajya Sabha and Deputy Leader of the party in the same house.
