Shanta Chhetri is a Rajya Sabha MP and belongs to All India Trinamool Congress. She was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on 31 July 2017. An Accountant by Profession, she began her political career with the Gorkha National Liberation Front in 1994. After completing her schooling in Ramakrishna Girls High School, Kurseong, she did her B.Com from Siliguri College of Commerce, Darjeeling. Then she completed her M.Com from the University of North Bengal, Darjeeling. During her student life, she had a keen interest in social welfare services. After completion of her studies, at the age of 38, she joined Gorkha Front and then All India Trinamool Congress in 2014. Currently, she is the working President, Trinamool Congress, Darjeeling District (Hills). Also, she is the member of several important committees like North Bengal Development Council, Rural Development Committee and West Bengal Commission for Women.
