Partha Chatterjee entered public life after a professional career in human resources and administration, gradually transitioning into active politics in West Bengal. His organisational abilities and administrative experience helped him emerge as a recognised political figure within the Trinamool Congress.

He was first elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Behala Paschim in 2001, marking the beginning of a long legislative career. Over successive terms, he built a strong electoral base and became one of the prominent faces of the party in the state legislature.

Between 2006 and 2011, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, playing a key role in legislative debates and party strategy during that period.
