Arup Roy

Arup Roy was born on 16 October 1956 in Howrah, West Bengal, India. He pursued higher education, completing postgraduate studies and training professionally as an advocate before entering politics. His legal background and grassroots engagement in Howrah laid the foundation for his long public service career.

Roy began his political journey with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), having joined the party where he later became a prominent figure in Howrah district politics. His organisational work at the district level strengthened his political base ahead of legislative contests.

In the 2011 West Bengal Assembly election, Roy was elected as the MLA from Howrah Madhya, defeating the incumbent and marking the start of his legislative career. He was subsequently re-elected in 2016 and 2021, reflecting continued support in his constituency and establishing him as a long-standing legislator.

On 20 May 2011, following his first electoral victory, Roy was inducted into the Cabinet of the Government of West Bengal and assigned the Co-operations portfolio, highlighting his role in overseeing cooperative sector governance. Over successive terms, he has maintained his ministerial responsibilities and remained an influential minister in the state government.

As of 2026, he continues to serve as an MLA and Cabinet Minister, engaged in legislative duties, state administration, and party leadership in the Howrah district.
