Dr. Ratna De Nag was born on 6 September 1948 in Serampore, Hooghly district, West Bengal. She hails from a political family; her father, Gopal Das Nag, served as a Labour Minister in the Congress government under Siddhartha Shankar Ray. She pursued her medical education, earning an MBBS followed by a Diploma in Child Health (DCH) from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, University of Calcutta, Kolkata.
Dr. De Nag entered electoral politics and was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha in 2009 as a candidate of the Trinamool Congress from the Hooghly parliamentary constituency. She was re-elected to the 16th Lok Sabha, serving until 2019. During her tenure in Parliament, she was a member of the Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas and also served on the Panel of Chairpersons.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, she contested again from Hooghly but lost to Locket Chatterjee of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following that defeat, she shifted her focus to state politics and contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from the Pandua constituency, securing victory and entering the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Dr. De Nag was appointed Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Government of West Bengal with portfolios including Environment, Science, Technology & Biotechnology in May 2021, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Cabinet.
As of 2026, she continues to serve as an MLA and minister, contributing to policy implementation and governance in West Bengal.
