Bratyabrata Basu Roy Chowdhury, better known as Bratya Basu, was born on 25 September 1969 in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, to Professor Dr. Bishnu Basu and Dr. Neetika Basu, an educational administrator. He completed his undergraduate studies in Bengali at Presidency College (now Presidency University) and later completed his postgraduate degree from the University of Calcutta, grounding his early life in both academia and cultural engagement.
Before entering politics, Basu established a strong reputation in the world of Bengali theatre and performing arts. He began his artistic career as a sound operator with the theatre group Ganakrishti and soon began writing and directing plays. His breakthrough came with the play Ashaleen (1996), considered by theatre critics to be one of the first postmodernist plays in Bengali drama. He later founded his own theatre group, Kalindi Bratyajon, and continued to push creative boundaries in drama and film.
Basu transitioned into electoral politics with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and was first elected as MLA from Dum Dum in 2011, defeating veteran politician Gautam Deb. He has since been re-elected in 2016 and 2021, reflecting his sustained support among constituents in North 24 Parganas.
In the Government of West Bengal, Basu has held multiple key portfolios: initially as Minister for Higher Education (2011–2014), then as Minister of Tourism (2014–2016), later overseeing Science, Technology & Bio-Technology and Information Technology & Electronics (2016–2021), and currently serving as Education Minister since May 2021. His ministerial roles demonstrate a blend of governance and policy influence across education, culture, and technology sectors.
As of 2026, he continues to focus on educational reforms and legislative responsibilities while maintaining active engagement in cultural initiatives.
