Aroop Biswas

Aroop Biswas was born on 5 October 1964 and completed his B.Com from New Alipore College before entering public life. He began his political involvement with student politics and later became a close associate of Mamata Banerjee, joining the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). His education and early organisational work laid a foundation for his long political career.

Biswas was first elected as the MLA from Tollyganj in 2006 and went on to secure re-election in 2011, 2016, and 2021, establishing a strong electoral presence in his constituency. Throughout his legislative career, he has been known for sustained constituent support and active engagement in state politics.

In May 2011, following the AITC’s rise to power in West Bengal, Biswas was inducted into the state Cabinet, initially handling the Public Works Department. In November 2015, he was assigned the portfolios of Power & Non-Conventional Energy and Housing, reflecting the confidence placed in him for key administrative roles.

In 2025, Biswas relinquished his responsibilities as Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs amid administrative challenges linked to a high-profile event organised in Kolkata, while continuing as the state’s Power and Housing Minister.

As of 2026, he remains an influential legislator and Cabinet Minister, involved in governance and party leadership activities.
