Moloy Ghatak was born in 1956 in Ukhra, West Bengal, to Phani Bhusan Ghatak. He comes from a family of advocates and followed the same profession, completing his graduation in Political Science from Ananda Chandra College, Jalpaiguri and an LL.B. from the University of Calcutta in 1982. Before entering politics, he practised as an Advocate, mainly at the Asansol Court, building a legal career as a third-generation lawyer.
Ghatak began his political journey with the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), first elected as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Hirapur constituency (2001–2006). After the constituency was abolished, he contested and won from the newly formed Asansol Uttar Assembly constituency in 2011 and was re-elected in subsequent elections, demonstrating sustained electoral support in the region.
In the Government of West Bengal, Ghatak has held multiple ministerial portfolios. He served as Minister for Agriculture (2012–2014), then as Minister for Labour, and from 2014 onwards, he assumed key roles including Minister of Law and, later, additional charge of Public Works, reflecting his expanding responsibilities in state governance.
Over the years, Ghatak has been recognised for his organisational influence in the Paschim Bardhaman district, playing an active role in party structures and regional development. He is also credited with contributing to the creation of the Paschim Bardhaman district, with its headquarters in Asansol.
As of 2026, Moloy Ghatak continues as an elected MLA from Asansol Uttar and serves as a senior minister in the Government of West Bengal, handling key administrative and legal responsibilities while remaining actively involved in legislative work, party organisation, and constituency-level development across the Paschim Bardhaman region.
