Paresh Chandra Adhikary Biography

Paresh Chandra Adhikary was born in Mekhliganj, Cooch Behar district, West Bengal; his father is Late Dutta Narayan Adhikary. He completed his Higher Secondary education from Mekhliganj High School in 1970. Early in his career, he was active with the All India Forward Bloc and began his long political journey with electoral politics in the Assembly.

He was first elected MLA from Mekliganj in 1991 on an AIFB ticket. After losing in 1996, he returned to win the seat in 2001, 2006, and 2011, establishing himself as a prominent leader in the region. During the Left Front government, Adhikary served as Acting Food Minister from 2006 to 2011.

In August 2018, Adhikary joined the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), shifting from his long-time association with AIFB. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from Cooch Behar as a TMC candidate but lost to BJP’s Nisith Pramanik.

In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, Adhikary won the Mekliganj (SC) seat as a TMC candidate and was appointed Minister of State for School Education in the state government under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He has been involved in policy discussions around education and local governance.

As of 2026, he continues serving as an MLA and contributing to legislative work and constituency development.
