Birbaha Hansda was born in Binpur, West Bengal, into a Santal tribal family, the daughter of veteran politicians Naren Hansda (founder of the Jharkhand Party (Naren)) and Chunibala Hansda, both of whom served in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
She completed her higher secondary education at Ghatshila College and later graduated from the University of Calcutta. Before entering politics, she had an acclaimed career as a Santali film actress, appearing in multiple films and earning awards, including the Santali Film Fair Award.
Initially associated with the Jharkhand Party (Naren), Birbaha contested elections, including the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, before joining the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in 2021 to expand her socio-political impact and work for tribal development.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, she was elected MLA from Jhargram, marking her first successful legislative campaign. She was appointed a Cabinet Minister in the West Bengal government with responsibilities including Self Help Group & Self-Employment (I/C) and later Forest and Consumer Affairs.
As of 2026, she continues as MLA and minister, advocating for community welfare, forest conservation, tribal rights, and self-employment initiatives.
