Akhil Giri

Akhil Giri was born on 12 September 1956 in West Bengal, India, to Paban Chandra Giri. He completed his schooling and passed the 12th standard from Contai K. M. Vidyabhavan before entering public life. Before full-time politics, he was involved in social work and local civic engagement.

Giri’s political career began with early organisational work in the AITC, which he joined in 1998 shortly after its formation. He first won election to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Ramnagar in 2001, though he lost the seat in 2006. He returned strongly to win the seat again in 2011, marking the start of consecutive terms.

He retained the Ramnagar Assembly seat in the 2016 and 2021 elections, reflecting robust constituent support and his long-standing presence in Purba Medinipur district politics. Alongside legislative duties, Giri has been active in party organisational roles and intra-district leadership.

In the Government of West Bengal, Giri served as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Correctional Administration beginning in August 2022 and has been involved in fisheries oversight and other administrative responsibilities. In August 2024, he resigned from his ministerial post after a controversy involving verbal threats toward a forest department official, but continued serving as an MLA.

As of 2026, he remains the elected representative for Ramnagar and a senior AITC leader.
